Codorus State Park in Hanover, Pennsylvania is situated around Lake Marburg. The 1,275-acre lake is popular for boating, fishing, and birding. The shoreline provides a stopping place for migrating waterfowl and shorebirds on their trip south.

We reserved a campsite for a few days in early October on the way back from a trip north to Vermont. The plan was to relax and explore the lake before returning home to North Carolina.

Visitor Center

The visitor center was very helpful to us as we planned out how to best spend time exploring Lake Marburg.

We learned about the wildlife that depend on the lake. Several bird species were on display.

An impressive number fish species were also presented. Our favorite exhibit was the live bee colony housed inside the Visitor Center. The bees accessed the indoor hive via a tube in the outer wall of the building. We enjoyed watching the busy bees at work.

With the bird species information in hand, our niece and grandson were excited to go to the bird viewing area.

They both enjoyed the opportunity to watch the birds. Laura was looking for new species to add to her life list.

Next, we moved on to a different part of the lake with wide open views.

Laura was able to add several species with counts to her eBird app. (For more about birding check out her post Birding at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge ).

As Laura continued her birding activities, the rest of us enjoyed watching the boats cruise by as we made our way to the shoreline. There we found very interesting rock formations. We hiked along the shoreline for miles amazed at the variety of rocks and shells.

Spending the day on Lake Marburg was very relaxing and beautiful. We explored the shoreline until the sun was starting to set. Then, unexpectedly, three powered paragliders appeared over lake.

We watched as they skillfully glided above our heads. Where did they come from? Where were they going? One waved to us, much to the delight of our grandson.

We waved back as the paraglider disappeared into the sunset. We stayed a few minutes longer to enjoy the auburn colors of dusk. Twlight was upon us as we made our way back to camp.

Codorus State Park on Lake Marburg turned out to be a relaxing ending to our trip north. The park was easy to access and had great camping facilities – just what we were looking for in our final stop before heading home to NC.
