Best Coastal Nature Hikes on the NC/SC Border

Sunset Beach NC Kindred Spirit Mailbox hike

Have you ever visited the southern end of coastal North Carolina? How about the most northern end of coastal South Carolina? The coastal communities in this area are less crowded and commercialized than the cities to the north and south. We travel often to these areas to enjoy the less crowded beaches and beautiful coastal landscape. The following three hikes along this coastal area are full of nature and peacefulness.

Kindred Spirit Mailbox, Sunset Beach, NC

Sunset Beach is the most southern beach of the North Carolina coast. The south end of the beach is known for the Bird Island Coastal Reserve and a famous mailbox. To reach this famous spot, the Kindred Spirit Mailbox, you hike about 3.8 miles south on the reserve near the jetty at the Little River Inlet. Far beyond the beach cottages and parking areas, the mailbox is a place to deposit an inspirational note.

There is also a bench to relax at (and record your thoughts) while you gaze out over the ocean. On our latest visit there, we enjoyed a misty morning hike just as the sun was starting to burn through the clouds.

When its time to head back, the best way to end a morning hike is with a bagel from the Bagel Dock. But be aware that the bagels run out fast on busy mornings!

Vereen Memorial Gardens, Little River, SC

Just south on Highway 17 from Sunset Beach on the border of NC and SC, you will find the small town of Little River, SC. Our favorite place to get a hike in here is at Vereen Memorial Gardens on the Intracoastal Waterway. The loop trail is 2.3 miles

The unique experience here is collecting oyster shells. It is customary to make a wish and hang them on a tree!

The hike back into the woods is pleasant also. The views of the marsh are serene and you can watch the fishing boats come and go.

Heritage Shores Nature Preserve, Cherry Grove, SC

Just a few miles south of Vereen Memorial Gardens is Cherry Grove Beach. Here you will find Heritage Nature Preserve on the Hog Inlet. The short 1.1 mile loop trail veers to the right along the wooded canal.

The trail is sandy through the woods then opens up to a nice picnic area, The other side of the loop follows the waterway with expansive views of the inlet leading to the ocean.

There are decks and overlooks on House Creek. It is a popular fishing and kayaking area. For an evening hike, the best views of the marsh and setting sun await as the trail leads back to the parking area.
