RV Travel: Coastal Georgia

Are you a snowbird RVer? Planning to migrate south for the winter? Does your route to warmer weather run south on I95 through Georgia? If so, this post is for you.

We go to Florida nearly every winter so I guess that makes us snowbirds! From our basecamp in Garner, NC, the shortest most direct route is simple – I95 south – you know the route EVERYONE takes :/ We find the migration south is much more interesting and enjoyable if we go a little off the beaten path. Our favorite migration stops in Georgia include Savannah and St. Marys. Both locations are desirable travel destinations any time of year, but in the winter months, crowds are fewer, so stopping over on the way to Florida is a must. We like locations where we can stretch our legs after several hours on the road. A good place to hike or walk is an important attribute of where we choose to stop. The average high winter temperatures run in the lower to mid-60s perfect for camping and hiking.

Camp and Hike: Skidaway Island State Park, Savannah Georgia

Skidaway Island State Park is a beautiful place to visit. The park is located on a section of the Intercoastal Waterway known as Skidaway Narrows.  Live oak trees draped with moss line the streets and paths throughout the park. It is a peaceful park and the RV campsites are large and well-spaced.

The Big Ferry Loop hike is 3 miles long and is an excellent hike for marsh and wildlife viewing.

Eat: Savannah Seafood Shack 116 East Broughton Street, Savannah GA

Have you ever experienced a shrimp cone? Imagine a bunch of shrimp in a waffle cone. The Savannah Seafood Shack is a great place to get a shrimp cone. The sweet cone is stuffed with fresh shrimp and slaw and then drizzled in a special sauce. The combination is delectable!

Camp and Hike: Crooked River State Park, St Marys Georgia

Crooked River State Park is situated on the East River and offers amazing views throughout the park. The RV campsites are very well maintained and many sites have full hookups.

There are four miles of trails in the park and you can also hike along the river. You will find a birding platform, a wildlife blind, and an observation tower as you explore the trails.

Visit St. Marys Waterfront Park 100 W. St. Marys Street

Stroll along the St. Marys riverfront to enjoy beautiful views of the marsh and St. Marys River. The park is picturesque and also the gateway to the Cumberland Island National Seashore. If you have the time do take the ferry over to the National Park.

Coastal Georgia is one of our favorite places to stop on our migration to the warm winter weather in Florida. You will find scenic places to explore and stretch your legs as your journey south continues…
