Why We Hike

We have always loved to hike. There is something about getting out in nature that is regenerating. I cannot remember a hike I regretted. David may or may not agree :/ Some of our more memorable hikes include:

  • Mount Elbert, CO – attempting a 14er where David felt the mountain move at 12,000 feet
  • Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, VA – following the Appalachian Trail in ankle-deep water because the trail was literally a running stream due to the pouring rain
  • Dolly Sods Wilderness, WV – in mud so deep we didn’t think our boots would stay on
  • Grand Canyon National Park, AZ – following the South Kaibab trail to Phantom Ranch in the blazing heat where I learned all about “canyon toe”

And yet we continue…Our latest hiking adventure is to complete the 52 Hike Challenge. We joined the challenge in June of 2022. As of this post, we are 18 hikes in and loving it. The way it works is simple: sign up (see the link below), hike each week for 52 weeks, share on social media, and encourage others to join. There are many versions of the challenge such as the:

  • Explorer series
  • Adventure series
  • Kid series
  • Pet series

More versions of the challenge are added all the time. We joined the explorer series because it fits what we like to do the most – go and explore new places. To complete the explorer series you must hike a different trail for each of the 52 hikes. The other series have different criteria.

We plan to complete the challenge in the spring of 2023. So far, our favorite hikes since joining the challenge include Hanging Rock State Park, NC and Canaan Valley, WV. Follow us on social media each week to see where the challenge takes us next! Check it out and join here #52hikechallenge
